Ovechkin sets Capitals games-played record at 984

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin played in his 984th career game Monday, all with the Washington Capitals, passing Calle Johansson for the new franchise record.

The 32-year-old is in his 13th NHL season, during which he has missed just 29 games. Since entering the league in 2005-06, he has logged more ice time than any other forward in the league.

Ovechkin is just two shy of reaching 40 goals in a season for the ninth time in his career, and needs just four more goals to become the 20th player in NHL history to score 600 times.
