2 arrested at anti-Sharia law event in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Virginia Beach police say two people were arrested at an demonstration.

Police say the event on Saturday was mostly a quiet display of people expressing their First Amendment rights. But two participants were arrested toward the end of the event at Mount Trashmore for assault and disorderly conduct.

About 40 people gathered at the event.

Demonstrators at small but raucous gatherings around the country expressed concerns that extremist interpretations of Islamic law might somehow spread across the U.S. But many of the rallies on Saturday drew even more boisterous counter-protests by people who called such fears unfounded.

The demonstrations were held in more than two dozen U.S. cities, including Seattle, New York, Chicago and San Bernadino.
