WASHINGTON — Two teenagers were hazed and assaulted by members of the football team in a local high school locker room, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says the assault happened in the boys’ locker room at Spotsylvania County High School before an away game Oct. 23.
A 14-year-old and 15-year-old were initially reluctant to report the assaults but eventually told police what happened Friday morning.
Detectives with the Child Victim Unit say they discovered evidence and confirmed the victims’ accounts based on witness information.
Capt. Jeff Pearce says the victims recently made the team.
One suspect, a 15-year-old, was arrested and charged with attempted sodomy with an inanimate object, a felony, and assault by mob, a misdemeanor. The suspect was transported to the Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Facility.
Detectives believe more than one person is responsible for the attack, and they are working to identify more suspects.
Pearce says the Spotsylvania County High School administration has been cooperating in the investigation. He says this appears to be an isolated incident.
“This incident, causing the victimization of our young people is a very serious matter. Schools should be a safe haven for our kids and we will continue to thoroughly investigate this matter,” said Sheriff Roger L. Harris, in a news release.
