NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – Federal authorities say a man was cited for bringing a loaded handgun to Norfolk International Airport after officers discovered the weapon in a carry-on bag.
The Transportation Security Administration says the gun was detected by a TSA officer staffing the X-ray machine at the airport’s checkpoint on Monday. The .25-caliber handgun was loaded with six rounds.
The TSA says in a news release that the man told officers he didn’t know the gun was in the bag.
Norfolk Airport Authority Police cited the man on a state weapons charge and confiscated the gun.
The TSA says the incident didn’t affect airport operations.
The agency says its officers have detected 11 guns at the Norfolk airport this year, up from seven guns in all of 2014.
