WASHINGTON — World travelers from the U.S. can do and see more in 2015: The euro is at its lowest in 12 years, and it’s not the only currency that’s dropped.
“The dollar is so darn strong everywhere in the world, the world is literally your oyster,” says Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger Personal Finance.
And while the exchange rate offers an array of possibilities, even in expensive tourist hot spots, Bodnar suggests looking into destinations that are off the beaten path.
Greece, for example, is currently experiencing financial difficulties and the economic situation has made prices drop. Bodnar points to a recent Groupon offering a 10-day trip for $1,900 that included lodging, airfare and food.
Bucharest, Romania is also a top recommendation from Kiplinger.
“(It’s) known as the little Paris because of its architecture. And also it’s a bit reminiscent of Prague … without the crowds and the high prices.”
In South America, wine lovers may find a slice of heaven in Argentina. Fans of skiing might look at Chile. Staying closer to home is also an option with Canada to the north. A French and European vibe can be found in Quebec without having to cross an ocean.
