SpaceX has launched the U.S. Air Force’s most powerful GPS satellite ever built. A Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral, hoisting the satellite toward orbit.
The bolted-down Dragon holds everything the station astronauts need for Christmas dinner, as well as mice and worms for science experiments, and more than 5,000 pounds of station equipment.
NASA officials issued a press release this week saying they would be undertaking a “cultural assessment study” of commercial partners SpaceX and Boeing.
The university team’s prototype will compete next week against 23 others from around the world.
SpaceX is sending up a load of space station supplies from the exact spot where Americans flew to the moon almost a half-century ago. The pad was last used in 2011 for NASA’s final space shuttle flight.
An official of the McLean-based company says the high-speed swap in space is “like changing out a car tire while moving 17,000 miles an hour.” The new satellites are scheduled to launch Sunday.
