What’s open and closed on Memorial Day 2016

WASHINGTON – The Memorial Day holiday means a lot of changes to government services and getting around the area. Here are the major changes:

The federal government will be closed, as will most local government offices in the D.C. area. No mail, except Express Mail, will be delivered.

Most banks will be closed.

Roads and major transit

Metro will be open from 7 a.m. to midnight, and trains will run on a Sunday schedule. The Orange Line is closed, as it is all weekend; that means that the Vienna, Dunn Loring and West Falls Church will also be closed. Buses will take riders to and from all three closed stations, and the Silver Line will be adjusted to cover the eastern leg of the Orange Line, thus running from Wiehle-Reston East to New Carrollton.

Other lines will be single tracking.

Neither MARC nor VRE trains will run Monday.

HOV restrictions are lifted in Virginia. In Maryland, they’re lifted on I-270, but not on U.S. 50.

D.C.

  • Trash and recycling schedules will slide for the holiday: In once-a-week collection neighborhoods, collections  will slide to the next day for the rest of the week. In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday’s and Thursday’s collections will slide to Tuesday and Friday; Tuesday’s and Friday’s, to Wednesday and Saturday. The Fort Totten Transfer Station is closed Monday.
  • There will be no street sweeping Monday.
  • D.C. outdoor pools and spray parks will be open; indoor pools, recreation and community centers will be closed. Fields will be open.
  • D.C. public libraries will be closed.
  • Parking enforcement in D.C. is suspended, except on Constitution Avenue Northwest in support of the parade. Roads around the parade will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. You can see a list of the closures on the D.C. government’s website.
