Student charged after stabbing at Prince George’s Co. high school

WASHINGTON — A Central High School student has been arrested and charged after a stabbing that injured two other students at the school in Capitol Heights, Maryland, on Thursday morning.

Edwin Aguilar Martinez, 19, of Seat Pleasant, is facing multiple charges, including a weapons charge, two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault, Prince George’s County police said.

Around 9 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of a stabbing at the school on Cabin Branch Road. Three students were involved in an argument inside a school hallway that morning, Police Chief Hank Stawinski told reporters during a news conference outside the school.

One of the students pulled out a small knife and wounded the two other students. Police later said Thursday night that an argument over a female student led to the stabbings.

The two students were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not life-threatening, Stawinski said.

“But it is a serious matter that this wounding occurred in the school,” Stawinski said.

The student with the knife turned himself in to school leadership, the chief said.

The assault sparked a lockdown via the school’s public-address system, said Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Kevin Maxwell.

During the news conference, Stawinski said the situation at the school had “stabilized.”

Maxwell said the school would remain open the rest of the day. When asked about school security measures, he said the school does not have metal detectors at every single door.

Police said additional officers remained at the school for the rest of the day.

“There are not fights; there are not people wandering the halls,” Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said Thursday morning. “It is stable and calm. And now we are doing the deliberate work of piecing together what this event was about so that we can come back and explain it and then hold responsible individuals accountable.” (WTOP/Megan Cloherty)
