U.Md. students find body during community service cleanup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — University of Maryland students found a body near Lake Artemesia in Prince George’s County while cleaning up the area as part of a community service effort.

The body was found in Indian Creek in the Berwyn Heights area of Lake Artemesia Natural Area at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Maryland-National Capitol Park Police.

“They thought they were picking up some pieces of trash, and saw some fabric,” said Maryland-National Capital Park Police Lt. Tracy Lieberman. “They were able to determine pretty quickly that it was a body.”

Police since determined the body belonged to an adult male. Prince George’s County police is investigating the death.

The students were cleaning up around the lake as part of the sixth annual “UMD Good Neighbor” event. More than 700 people pitched in to clean up parks and properties in College Park.

The unidentified remains have been sent to the medical examiner. University of Maryland has offered counseling to the students who discovered the body.
