WASHINGTON (AP) — The owner of a Maryland building contracting company has been sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison for stealing roughly $1.7 million from a labor union.
The U.S. Department of Justice says 57-year-old Gary Amoes Cooper of Kettering, Maryland, was the owner and CEO of STS General Contracting. He was sentenced Monday in federal court in Washington. Cooper was also ordered to pay restitution to Local 657 of the Laborers Union of North America, and to forfeit the stolen money.
Prosecutors say Cooper funneled $1.7 million in Local 657 funds to his contracting company for projects his firm did not work on. Cooper’s co-defendants, Christopher Kwegan and Anthony Frederick, previously pleaded guilty.
