WASHINGTON — The passenger of a car at the center of a police-involved shooting Thursday in Capitol Heights, Maryland, is now facing firearms charges.
Court records indicate that Alvin Young Jr., 39 of Southeast D.C., is being charged with illegal firearms possession, possession of a shotgun and other charges.
Charging documents suggest that Young had a felony conviction, which made possessing or owning firearms illegal.
At about 830 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle with the engine running in the 4100 block of Byers Street in the Bradbury Heights area of Capitol Heights. Officers approached the vehicle where Young and the driver — 19-year-old Terrence Thomas Jr., of Capitol Heights — were sleeping, police said.
After officer attempted to awaken the two occupants of the vehicle, Young attempted to flee the vehicle. Police said Thomas pointed a gun at Young and an officer standing outside the car. That’s when an officer shot Thomas twice in the chest. He later died at a hospital.
Prince George’s County police identified the officer as 22-year-old Steven Tucker, 22, who has been with the department for a year and a half.
No officers were hurt, police said.
The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation.
