LARGO, Md. — On Thursday morning, a woman died after a multicar crash in Largo. Now one of the drivers, who shouldn’t have been behind the wheel in the first place, is out on bond and is not currently facing any charges in the crash.
The crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. at Largo and Lottsford roads. Maryland State Police say for unknown reasons, a blue Chevy Silverado driven by 34-year-old Juan Sanchez, of Laurel, and a burgundy GMC driven by 53-year-old Angela Jefferson, of Springdale, collided. Seven other cars were also hit by the out of control vehicles involved in the initial crash.
Jefferson was killed.
Sanchez was arrested after the crash, when officers realized he had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear in court for a 2014 drunken driving charge.
“As to why it wasn’t served I am not sure, but that was what he was arrested on,” said John Erzen, spokesman with the Prince George’s County State Attorney’s Office.
The Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Department would be the agency which would be responsible for picking up Sanchez on his outstanding warrant.
After being booked for not showing up to court, Sanchez was released on $2,600 bond.
During the initial investigation into the wreck, it was also discovered that Sanchez was driving without a license, but he has yet to face any charges related to the crash.
At this time, no one has been charged in the crash and it may be some time before any charges are announced. It can take months to investigate a fatal car crash and any charges would start the clock for a person’s right to a speedy trial.
“If the investigation were to show that a more serious charge such as motor vehicle manslaughter or negligent homicide would be warranted, we would not be able to charge them with that if they had taken care of the traffic offenses,” Erzen said.
The MSP’s crash reconstruction team and Prince George’s County police are continuing their investigations into the crash.
