D.C. man charged with murder in death of baby girl

WASHINGTON — A D.C. man has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of a baby girl in Landover.

Prince George’s County Police say 23-year-old Kareem Bryant, of the 1400 block of 18th Street SE, was arrested Friday in connection with the death of 6-month-old Mariah Tilghman. Police say Bryant and the baby’s mother were in a relationship.

“I am so angry. I am so sad,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said Friday. “Mariah deserved to be safe in her house. This was not an accidental killing. These  children should not be murdered in their bedrooms. They’re not being murdered on the streets, they’re being murdered by people who know them.”

On Jan. 6, officers were called to the 3200 block of 75th Avenue for the report of a baby who wasn’t breathing. The infant was taken to a local hospital and later succumbed to her injuries on Jan. 9.

Alsobrooks said it is believed Bryant was alone with the baby, in her bedroom, where she was killed.

“We believe the mother was in the home, at the time this occurred,” she said.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death was blunt force injuries to the baby’s head and chest, according to police. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Police say Bryant admitted to causing the baby’s injuries.

He is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse resulting in death. He was arrested in D.C. and is awaiting extradition to Prince George’s County. Bryant faces 30 years for second-degree murder.
