UPDATE, 8 p.m. 3/7/15: The Prince George’s County Police Department says an officer who died after crashing his cruiser Saturday morning had an adult female passenger in the car with him.
Police say Officer Brennan Rabain was off duty when he activated his cruiser’s lights and sirens while attempting to conduct a traffic stop.
While he was trying to make the stop, police say Rabain lost control of his car. It ran off the road and crashed into a wooden fence. The circumstances of the crash are under investigation, and police are looking into the possibility that it was weather-related.
Police said the passenger in the cruiser suffered minor injuries. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment, and has been sedated since Saturday morning, according to a news release.

A Prince George’s County police officer was killed after his cruiser crashed early Saturday morning, WTOP has confirmed.
According to Prince George’s County Police, the accident occurred early Saturday morning on Greenbelt Road between Goddard Drive and Good Luck Road in Lanham, Md.
Police say the accident happened at approximately 3:30 a.m. when Rabin attempt to make a traffic stop on Greenbelt Road. He lost control of his cruiser, went off the road and crashed into a wooden fence.
Wearing black arm bands, fellow officers “are deeply upset and deeply moved,” said WTOP reporter Jamie Forzato, from the press conference in Lanham Saturday morning. Rabain had been on the force for less than two years and leaves behind a 3-year-old.
Police are investigating whether black ice was a factor.
WTOP traffic reporters said the roads Saturday morning were particularly treacherous due to patches of black ice. Numerous accidents have been reported across the area.
