WASHINGTON — The Archdiocese of Washington recognized three area residents for filming videos that promote the idea of helping local communities and assisting the needy.
The three winners were awarded for their submissions in the archdiocese’s YouServe video competition where residents were asked to film videos that demonstrated “Pope Francis’ example of living out the Gospel through service to others.”
One of the winners was Becky Duncan of College Park, Maryland, who created a video called “You Serve.” Her video showed how Duncan serves her community as a lector at her local church, St. Mark the Evangelist.
The Archdioceses says Duncan also cooks for the nonprofit So Others Might Eat, teaches a Shakespeare summer camp, collects clothing for Goodwill, hosts foreign exchange students and spends time recycling and composting.
Another winner was Jay Davila of Alexandria, Virginia, who produced a video called “Christ in the Park.” Davila’s video showed a group of people feeding the hungry and “breaking bread” with strangers in a D.C. park.
The third winner was Monica Carranza from Silver Spring, Maryland, who submitted a video entitled “Tira La Red Mission: El Salvador 2015.” Her video showed a mission trip to El Salvador where youth ministry members visited homes of families, bringing donations of clothing, shoes, bibles and school supplies.
Winners of the competition had a choice between receiving an iPad Air 2 or a GoPro HERO 4 as their prize in addition to receiving four tickets each for the Mass to be celebrated by Pope Francis at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception next week Wednesday.
