Viewpoint: A dad does the college visit circuit — and comes up with some business lessons

If you have a high schooler who is a junior, you may have done what we did: visited college campuses over spring break. The trip made me equal parts envious and sentimental, but I came also away with a bunch of business takeaways.

First, the college building boom continues. There may be empty office space all over the country — in some cities there might not be a new office building built for a decade — but the schools we visited were in the midst of or about to break ground on several new buildings.

Despite the building boom, student housing remains a challenge for many campuses. The student housing business appears to be a good return on investment and there isn’t enough of it in many places. Could some of that empty office space in many cities be turned into student housing?

Second, on one of the tours our guide mentioned that in his first year he took a class focused on the history of electronic dance music. No harm in that, but looking up at the people doing the construction…
