Roughly 20% of the federal government will shut down at the end of the day Friday if Congress can’t reach a deal by then to fund those agencies, potentially leaving thousands of D.C.-area workers without paychecks for as long as a shutdown lasts.
To that end, several financial institutions, including Navy Federal Credit Union and PenFed Credit Union, are once again offering interest-free personal loans and lines of credit to federal workers who need them during a shutdown.
The first set of agencies to be affected would be the departments of Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Energy and Housing and Urban Development. And a March 8 deadline looms for Congress to reach a deal to fund the rest of the of government, or at least pass a short-term funding extension.
