How will a government shutdown affect Washington?

Call it deja vu, Groundhog Day or just a recurring nightmare: The Washington region is bracing for yet another potential government shutdown, the fourth since last fall.

Congress and the Biden administration have until midnight Friday to reach an appropriations agreement or short-term funding bill to stave off a partial government shutdown that would begin at 12:01 Saturday morning, this one affecting about 20% of federal operations.

The White House budget office last week told impacted agencies — including the departments of Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Energy, Veterans Affairs, Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration — to prepare for a stoppage.

Another funding measure impacting the other 80% of the government is set to expire at midnight March 8, meaning those agencies would face a shutdown at 12:01 a.m. March 9. Agencies with funding tied to that measure…
