Fort Belvoir name to remain despite ties to slavery, DOD rules

Fort Belvoir, an economic engine for Fairfax County, will not be renamed despite its connection to slavery, a U.S. Army commission has ruled.

The Defense Department’s Naming Commission, charged with providing removal or renaming recommendations for all DOD items — including bases, statues and other items — that commemorate the Confederacy or any person who voluntarily served the Confederate States, found no such connection with Fort Belvoir, Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth informed Defense Department officials this week.

In a letter dated Feb. 21 to William LaPlante, under secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Wormuth wrote that “all stakeholders acknowledged that the name Belvoir” has no such ties, according to a copy of the letter posted to X by state Sen. Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon.
