Shocking robbery at The Wharf caught on video, amid rising concerns about crime citywide

A brazen armed robbery that took place earlier this week outside a popular restaurant at The Wharf — captured in a video first posted on social media and later confirmed by police — is drawing heightened attention to the challenges of rising crime on D.C. residents, visitors and its businesses.

The incident occurred just outside Philippe in the 600 block of Wharf Street SW toward The Wharf’s southeastern end, according to the Metropolitan Police Department, which issued a press release and video clips after the video circulated widely on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. There were no injuries.

The Wharf is the District’s newest development gem, a two-phase, $3 billion project with hotels, residences, offices and some of the hottest restaurants in town. Hoffman & Associates, The Wharf’s co-developer, has so far declined to comment.
