Viewpoint: National emergency braking mandate is no overreach

There continues to be far too many people dying on our roads and highways. An estimated 31,785 people died in traffic crashes from January to September 2022 in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That does not include the approximately 7,508 people killed by drivers while walking in 2022, based on a report by the Governors Highway Safety Association.

A little closer to home, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department reports that 25 traffic fatalities have occurred as of June 29, up 47% from 2022. In Maryland, 540 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2022, according to MDOT. And in Virginia, VDOT reports that traffic crashes took the lives of 1,004 people in 2022. Fatality rates are the highest they’ve been in 15 years, despite local governments’ efforts to curb the trend with new infrastructure, educational campaigns and traffic enforcement.
