Google Assistant Tops Rivals in AI Performance Test (GOOG)

Tech investors and analysts understand that artificial intelligence will likely drive the next era of technological advancement. But while investors are waiting for technology leaders to fine-tune true AI and machine learning capabilities, Loup Ventures recently put three of today’s most popular digital assistants to the test to see which company’s service is meeting the practical needs of American users.

A team of analysts led by Gene Munster tested the progress of Apple Inc (ticker: AAPL), Alphabet Inc ( GOOG, GOOGL) and Microsoft Corp. ( MSFT) by putting Siri, Google Assistant and Cortana to a head-to-head test.

“We see speech-driven user interfaces as a key component of the next computing paradigm, so it’s helpful to understand empirically where each platform stands today,” Munster wrote.

Loup asked each assistant 800 unique queries and graded their responses based on both correctly comprehending the questions and correctly answering them.

While the algorithms driving the software of these programs are incredibly complex, Loup’s questions were simple, practical questions that reflect the type of general use the services would get from the average American user. Example questions include “Where is the nearest McDonalds ( MCD)?” and “Where can I buy more print paper?”

Loup reports that Google Assistant was a clear winner in terms of both understanding and correctly answering the questions. Google Assistant correctly understood 99.9 percent of questions, topping Cortana (97.3 percent) and Siri (94.4 percent). Google Assistant also correctly answered 74.8 percent of queries, topping both Siri (66.1 percent) and Cortana (48.8) percent.

“By category, Google’s lead in navigation and information is demonstrable, but there’s more parity between Siri and Google Assistant in local, commerce and command-related queries,” Munster said.

For now, Google investors can rest assured that Google Assistant is the gold standard of voice assistant technology. Google’s home assistant platform Google Home also outperformed Amazon.com’s ( AMZN) Amazon Echo in a similar Loup Ventures test earlier this year.
