The General Services Administration’s decision not to move forward, for now, with the FBI’s proposed headquarters relocation left in limbo one of Greater Washington’s largest federal moves — at least until Congress steps up with additional funding for the project.
The 2.1 million-square-foot requirement would shift about 11,000 headquarters employees from multiple sites across the D.C. region into a consolidated campus in Greenbelt, Landover or Springfield. The move from downtown D.C. is one of the biggest economic development prospects in the region, and proponents including Maryland’s congressional delegation hope to convince House and Senate lawmakers to set aside the $1.4 billion needed to take the project to the next step.
