As people continue to cut the cord and seek out other means of watching television and its related content, organizations are teaming up with social media giants to navigate the change.
Turner, whose parent company is Time Warner (ticker: TWX), announced an expansion of its partnership with Snap Inc. Wednesday, which includes adding new brands to Snapchat Discover and the development of Snapchat series in conjunction with Turner brands.
The platform broadening makes sense, considering a report this year that showed more than one in five households either ditched cable television subscriptions or never had them to begin with. Snapchat has more than 150 million daily active users and people use it for an average of 25 to 30 minutes each day, notes Mashable. All eyes will be on Snap next year, awaiting its forthcoming IPO.
Turner touted in a news release that its brands attract more than 75 percent of millennials every month, and said that its original Snapchat series will be geared toward the social network’s mobile-first audience.
Bleacher Report already has international Discover Channels on the platform but will debut its first U.S. Discover channel Jan. 4, featuring videos, images, animations and graphics in sports coverage. CNN’s Discover Channel is going to grow with more daily content like world news stories specifically targeted for Snapchat users.
Live sports remains a major draw for social media companies to pursue. Snapchat’s Live Stories feature will include more fleshed out coverage of events like the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship and the PGA Championship. Snap also works with the NBA and the NFL, according to Mashable, and has also collaborated with companies like Viacom (VIAB) and NBCUniversal.
Earlier this year, Twitter (TWTR) turned heads by partnering with the NFL to livestream games on the social network. Facebook (FB) has gotten in on the action too, partnering with ABC News to broadcast the presidential debates on Facebook Live.
