7 things to start your New Year’s Eve, and why ice is nice at Nationals Park (Video)

Good morning and welcome to your Wednesday. Here’s some of your business:

1. AM News Talkers:

The ice is ready and the weather will be bone-chillingly perfect Thursday — New Year’s Day — for the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The Washington Capitals will take to the ice for the 1 p.m. faceoff vs. the Chicago Blackhawks. If you’re driving in, note that several streets will be closed, beginning as early as 8:30 a.m. They include N Street SE from 1st Street SE to Van Street; Half Street SE between M and N streets; Van Street SE between M and N street will be utilized by taxis and stadium-bound traffic only. They will be one-way during the game.

Should you decide to ignore Metro and drive in, there’s a bit of good news: The District Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works will keep parking meters turned off around Nationals Park on New Year’s Day. Free parking near Nationals Park? You got it.

You probably had this figured out all along, but unless there’s a Wednesday Miracle, D.C.’s new streetcar will not open in 2014, as promised. It probably won’t be open Friday, Jan. 2 — Mayor Vincent Gray’s last day in office. Gray had vowed to get the line running, as in carrying passengers, in 2014. It’s running — but only for continuous testing. Gray told The Associated Press D.C. was “exceedingly close” to having the 2.4 mile line on H Street picking up passengers. That won’t be happening — this year, at least.

2. Weather: Sunny — and cold. Hey, it’s New Year’s Eve, and Wednesday’s forecast is perfect for the ice out at Nationals Park. Ahead? Should be a decent New Year’s Day before a possible wintery mix kicks in over the long weekend. Here. Have a look.

3. Business travel: Check the status of your flight. And Flightstats.com also has the details. Before you scram, check out the national weather forecast. Bitterly cold weather comes topside down across the U.S.A.

6. Sports smack for the AM coffee run: The Caps tried to keep it real vs. the New York Rangers Tuesday, but ultimately lost 4-2. … It was a tough loss for the Wizards, too, Tuesday, after the big win Monday. They fell flat vs. Dallas — 114-87. You read that right.

7. Quote of the day:“We’re in very tight fiscal constraints right now, and we’re going to make very tough decisions, which is what the voters elected me to do.” — Maryland Gov.-elect Larry Hogan warning of possible upcoming state budget cuts.

End note: That’s it for today. See you bright and early Friday. Yes. We’re chillin’ New Year’s Day. See you at the movies?
