NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Shipyard workers in Newport News have finished dry dock work on aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding.
With tugboats guiding it into the James River, the carrier was moved from one of the shipbuilder’s dry docks to an outfitting berth this week.
During the dry dock phase, the Lincoln underwent extensive repair and construction work both inside and out to revamp the ship.
The carrier arrived in Newport News in March 2013. Shipyard officials say the Lincoln is on track for delivery to the Navy in 2016.
Once the overhaul is complete, the ship’s lifespan will last another 25 years.
