ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Safeway plans to reopen its King Street store in December.
The store, next to the Bradlee Shopping Center, will be roughly 60,000-square-feet, says Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle.
“It will be a much more modern Safeway with a full-service deli, bakery and floral department,” Muckle says.
Safeway has not released an actual date for the store’s reopening, but employees at the store’s pharmacy have told customers the opening is set for Dec. 5.
The old, 44,000-square-foot store was built in 1982 and closed in July 2013.
The new facility is being built in the same location, but the parking will be under the building, rather than on a lot in front of it.
Muckle says the new store at 3526 King St., will include something the previous one did not — self-checkout lanes. There will be a Starbucks inside the store as well.
Next to the store will be a new barbershop called Floyd’s.
Since Safeway closed its King Street store, a Fresh Market has opened in the Bradlee Shopping Center, half a block away.
