NEW YORK (AP) — Sixth-seeded Francis Tiafoe of College Park, Maryland, couldn’t convert on two match points and lost to fifth-seeded Quentin Halys of France in the U.S. Open boys’ semifinals Saturday.
The 17-year-old Halys won 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (6). He will play unseeded Omar Jasika of Australia in the final. Jasika was leading Jan Choinski of Germany 6-3, 4-1 when Choinski retired with heat-related problems.
Ninth-seeded Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine will face Marie Bouzkova of Czech Republic in the girls’ final. The 17-year-old Kalinina defeated wild card Katerina Stewart of Miami 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Bouzkova beat qualifier Caroline Dolehide of Hinsdale, Illinois, 6-3, 6-1.
The last Americans to reach the U.S. Open boys’ final were Jack Sock and Denis Kudla in 2010.
The 16-year-old Tiafoe plans to focus on pro events next year and may not play in the Grand Slam junior tournaments.
