Obama to return home after fundraisers

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will be interrupting a weekend trip to return to the White House. Officials say he’s changed his plans and will return to Washington late this evening after fundraisers in Rhode Island and New York, where he had planned to spend the night.

Aides say the change in plans isn’t related to any current events. The travel comes as Obama considers how to respond to the threat from the Islamic State group, and Russia’s apparent invasion of Ukraine.

Obama headlines three events today. Two are just north of New York City in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from 2012.

Obama will spend tomorrow morning in Washington, then return to New York later in the day for the wedding of his personal chef Sam Kass and MSNBC host Alex Wagner.
