Postal Service plan would shift operations out of Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — A mail processing facility that employs about 400 people in Roanoke would shift its operations to Greensboro, North Carolina, under a plan announced by the U.S. Postal Service.

The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/1qmZycx ) that the facility is one of 82 targeted in a consolidation plan that the Post Service says will save $750 million a year.

It’s the second wave of such activities. The Postal Service says the first phase consolidated 141 mail processing facilities across the country, resulting in annual savings of $865 million. The service says those moves resulted in “negligible service impact” and no layoffs.
