Roddick to play for new Austin Aces in WTT

NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Roddick is ready to compete for the World Team Tennis title this summer, switching gears from owner to player for his hometown Austin Aces.

Roddick, along with Venus Williams, joined Billie Jean King’s WTT ownership group last year.

“Once the season starts, I put away my owner’s hat and I want to win,” Roddick said Wednesday.

The former No. 1 player retired in 2012 and helped bring the new team to Austin. He’ll play all seven home matches and travel to San Diego, Philadelphia and Springfield, Missouri.

“It’s kind of fun and funky,” Roddick said of the league. “Most people tell you to be quiet at matches, we tell you to be louder.”

Williams, who advanced to the third round of Wimbledon, plays for the three-time defending champion Washington Kastles.

The 39th WTT season begins July 6, with the final July 27 on ESPN2.
