STERLING, Va. (AP) — Some northern Virginia drivers say they’re no longer using the 30-year-old Dulles Toll Road because the tolls are too high.
Tolls have increased for five straight years on the 14-mile roadway linking Dulles International Airport and the Capital Beltway. A one-way trip on the road now costs $3.50, which works out to $35 a week for commuters — or more than $1,800 a year.
More than 327,000 vehicles use the road daily. But some commuters tell The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/pvk424s) that they’ve begun to avoid it whenever possible.
Burt Rosenberg of Reston says he refuses to use the road unless he’s running late, because of “the principle.”
Some drivers also say they’re avoiding the road because the toll revenue is going toward Metro’s Silver Line, which they may never use.
