PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Portsmouth officials plan to spruce up the city’s historic cemeteries and create park-like settings to attract visitors.
Crews are working to repair damaged gravesites, replace fencing and remove brush and debris.
Media outlets report that the city also plans to add benches, historic signage and water fountains.
A new position, cemetery superintendent, has been created to oversee the cemeteries’ operation.
City officials also want to build up a perpetual fund to pay for cemetery maintenance.
