Alexandria Wegmans delayed, not denied

You’ll have to buy your next holiday ham elsewhere: The planned Alexandria-area Wegmans will not open in 2014, store officials say.

But don’t fret, too much, the sought-after Rochester, N.Y.-based chain will open as the anchor to the new Hilltop Village Center in 2015, perhaps as soon as the first quarter.

“Our store design and the permitting process took longer than we expected,” Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale said in an email. “We had originally hoped to open in November. Since we do not open stores from mid-November through the end of the year, the opening was postponed until after [Jan. 1, 2015.]”

Natale said they hope to open in early 2015, but Wegmans has not set a firm date.

Houston-based Weingarten Realty Investors (NYSE: WRI) is developing Hilltop at the intersection of Beulah Street and Telegraph Road, near the north gate of Fort Belvoir. The project is planned to include 250,000 square feet of retail, including the 143,000-square-foot Wegmans and 100,000 square feet of office.

As a reminder, here are the stores that Weingarten has lined up so far for Hilltop. Based on the site plan, Hilltop appears to be over two-thirds leased.
