WASHINGTON – Recent rains have further deteriorated a bridge along Kalmia Road, forcing its replacement sooner than District officials had planned.
Kalmia Road will be closed beginning Tuesday after the morning rush between East Beach Drive NW and West Beach Drive NW. The stretch of road will be closed for six months while the structure is replaced.
The D.C. Department of Transportation had planned to replace the culvert with a new bridge beginning in November. However rain storms during the past few weeks washed away dirt and other material from the foundation of the bridge. These so-called scour holes are the most frequent cause of bridge failures.
Detour signs will be posted. Drivers should plan for traffic delays along detour routes.
