WASHINGTON – The Navy Yard in D.C. isn’t a stranger to attacks or attempted ones.
In 1983, a bomb went off at the Navy Yard’s Computer Center and in 1984, a bomb exploded at the Navy Yard Officer’s Club. The attacks were the last ones to happen before the Monday shooting that left 13 people dead, including the gunman.
No one was hurt in either previous incident because phone calls came warning of the bombings before they happened.
It was part of the Resistance Conspiracy that occurred in the 1980s — the most famous of which was the U.S Senate bombing at the U.S Capitol. No one was injured in that incident, either.
Several members of a communist group were charged in the incidents. The secret organization went by several names, including the Armed Resistance Unit.
The indictment said the group conducted surveillance of other potential bombing targets, including the White House and the U.S Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
