Man, 54, dead after Fairfax Co. fire

WASHINGTON – A 54-year-old man is dead after a townhouse fire Thursday night in the Woodlawn area of Fairfax County.

The man has been identified as Clifford Johns.

The fire started about 9:05 p.m. in the 8600 block of Venoy Court, off Sacramento Drive, in the Villages of Mount Vernon.

When Fairfax County firefighters arrived, they found the rear of the two-story, middle unit townhouse on fire.

They found the fire fully involved in a second-floor bedroom and found Johns in that room.

Firefighters rescued and transported him to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Three other people in the home escaped safely. None was hurt.

Fire officials say there was a smoke detector in the house. It was not mounted and did not activate.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It caused $50,000 damage to the home, but adjoining homes did not sustain any fire damage.

The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of Johns’ death.
