WASHINGTON – A camera that catches a lot of speeders has been removed, at least for now.
D.C. police tell WTOP the cameras on Interstate 295 near exit 1 by the Blue Plains Water Treatment Plant in Southwest are being replaced.
Spokeswoman Gwen Crump says new equipment with better cameras will be installed early next week. The cameras on northbound and southbound 295 at Benning Road will be replaced.
The cameras generated more than 160,000 tickets in 2012, generating $15.8 million for the District, the most of any speed camera location.
The cameras catch drivers coming from Oxon Hill and National Harbor in Maryland and those exiting the Beltway from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
“I-295 is not a typical interstate with wide lanes and shoulders. And any collision there snarls traffic, even minor fender benders. This roadway has the highest speed of any in the District, and as long as speeding remains an issue, we will continue to provide enforcement,” Crump says.
