Officials ID Md. woman killed in Cheverly fire

WASHINGTON – Officials are identifying the 59-year-old Cheverly woman killed in a fire Sunday morning, but have not been able to determine what caused the fire.

The medical examiner identified the woman as Stephanie Kay Syslo of Cheverly. The cause of death was smoke inhalation and thermal injuries.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department officials say the fire started in a second floor bedroom at the home in the 2400 block of 59th Place and moved to the attic and the roof, before firefighters were able to put it out.

Officials believe the fire, which caused an estimated $75,000 in damages, was accidental.

One firefighters was injured, treated and released from the hospital Sunday.

The home had a smoke detector that was missing a battery.
