UPDATE: Friday – 2/8/2013, 10:00am ET – Fairfax County police have identified the man struck and killed by an Amtrak train Thursday as 64-year-old Richard Anderson of the North Springfield area.
Police say the train was traveling near the Backlick Road overpass when it hit Anderson at about 7 p.m. An investigation is continuing, but police do not suspect foul play.
UPDATE: Thursday – 2/7/2013, 9:25pm ET – VRE reports that as of 8:55 p.m. all passengers were loaded onto buses and headed home.
Six buses were needed to transport the passengers, VRE says.
Amtrak says that a pedestrian walking across the tracks had been struck. The train was traveling from New York to New Orleans with 226 passengers on board.
Thursday – 2/7/2013, 8:09pm ET – WASHINGTON – A Virginia Railway Express train is stopped south of Alexandria because of a fatal crash involving an Amtrak train.
RE says train 337, the last commuter train of the evening, on the Manassas line was stopped at Backlick Road. VRE is working to get buses there to take passengers the rest of the way.
The train was halted because an Amtrak train struck and killed a person in the Burke area just before 7 p.m.
Amtrak expects service to be restored around 9 p.m.
