WASHINGTON – There could be thousands of voters out there who might not be able to vote this Nov. 6 because they didn’t check to ensure their voter registration is up to date.
Virginia residents should have received a voter registration card by now. It’s likely that those who haven’t are not properly registered.
“If you have moved within the last four years, and you haven’t voted within the last four years, it could affect you,” says Fairfax County Registrar Cameron Quinn.
“We’ve also had congressional redistricting and as a result the lines have changed,” says Quinn.
As many as 200,000 voters fall into one of these two categories in Fairfax County alone, Quinn says. Another 77,000 have been taken off the rolls because their voter registration cards could not be forwarded by the post office.
Congressional redistricting can also create confusion as polling locations have changed for some voters, she says. Often, even properly registered voters show up at the wrong polling place and may not have time on Election Day to get to the right location.
Several area jurisdictions in both Virginia and Maryland will staff Metro stations across the region Tuesday afternoon to remind commuters to check their registration. Voters can also check their registration through a regional voter website as well.
