WASHINGTON – Who will win the gold for Wii bowling, Pickleball and Scrabble? Those are some of the big questions for this year’s Northern Virginia Senior Olympics.
There are also more ordinary events like swimming, cycling, volleyball and badminton. Just all of the athletes are over 50 — and one competitor is 102.
She’s in the Scrabble competition.
This is the 30th anniversary of the games. There will be more than 40 events at 18 different venues throughout Northern Virginia starting on Sept. 15 and ending on Sept. 26.
Organizers have added six new events for the 2012 competition — including a 400 meter walk and the high jump.
The highlight of the games may be Pickleball — called the fasting growing sport in America for seniors.
“If you’ve ever been to a Pickleball competition. These folks are intense,” says Judy Massabny, the co-coordinator of the games.
Pickleball is a sport played on a badminton court with a lower net. Players hit a ball similar to a whiffle ball with large wood or composite paddles.
