WASHINGTON – This weekend is all about high temperatures, Metro delays, and construction closures. Keep in mind that Metro will allow riders to bring water onto buses and trains, and into stations through Tuesday. Metro’s fare hike takes effect Sunday, and track work will close five stations, causing huge delays.
Expect delays on the Beltway near the Wilson Bridge due to construction on the Inner Loop, and I-66 will have an overnight closure tonight. Read on for the details, and have a great pre-holiday weekend.
Metro construction, fare hikes, “No Drinking” exception
In addition to the usual weekend construction delays, Metro’s fare hikes take effect this Sunday. Read the full list of changes.
Due to the anticipated high temperatures over the weekend, Metro will allow riders to bring water on buses, in stations, and on trains. Water will be the only exception to the current “no drinking” policy, effective Friday through Tuesday.
All Metro construction begins at 10 p.m. Friday and continues through system closing on Sunday. Here’s the summary from WMATA.
Orange Line
- Buses will replace trains between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton for track maintenance, tie and fastener renewal, grout work and platform rehabilitation.
- Five stations will be closed: New Carrollton, Landover, Cheverly, Deanwood and Minnesota Avenue.
- Orange Line trains will operate between Vienna and Stadium-Armory at regular weekend intervals. Free shuttle buses will operate on two routes: express service between New Carrollton and Stadium-Armory only, and local service between all closed stations.
- Delays of 30 to 60 minutes can be expected.
Blue Line
- Buses will replace Blue Line trains between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road for track maintenance, tie and fastener renewal, grout work and platform rehabilitation.
- Blue Line trains will operate in two segments: between Benning Road and Largo Town Center at regular weekend intervals, and between Stadium-Armory and Franconia-Springfield at regular weekend intervals.
- Delays of at least 20 minutes are expected.
Red Line
- Trains will single track between Judiciary Square and Rhode Island Avenue for track maintenance, tie and fastener renewal and DDOT bridge work.
- More single tracking between Medical Center and Grosvenor stations.
- Trains will operate every 20 minutes between Glenmont and Shady Grove throughout the weekend.
- Additional trains will operate between Medical Center and Judiciary Square, providing service every ten minutes.
I-66 construction closures
Starting 10 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Saturday, westbound I-66 at the Beltway will have only one lane open while crews remove an old overhead box girder. After midnight, all lanes will be temporarily blocked for up to 30 minutes at a time. A one-hour stoppage could take place between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.
Lewinsville Road closure
In McLean, Lewinsville Road will be closed over I-495 from 9:30 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday. Crews will close the road again around 9:30 p.m. Saturday through 9 a.m. Sunday.
Detour signs will be posted, and the work is weather permitting.
Wilson Bridge Project closures
Construction closures will affect the Inner Loop of the Beltway near the Wilson Bridge all weekend. Here’s the summary from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
9 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Saturday
- The exit ramp from the Inner Loop LOCAL to Telegraph Road North and Pershing Avenue will be closed.
- Drivers headed to Duke Street should take the Van Dorn Street exit and go north on Van Dorn to Duke Street. Motorists headed to the Eisenhower Valley should continue on the Inner Loop to the Van Dorn exit and take South Van Dorn North to Eisenhower Avenue East to the Eisenhower Valley.
9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday
- The access ramp from U.S. Route 1 South to the Inner Loop LOCAL LANES will be closed.
- The ramp to the Inner Loop THRU LANES will be open.
- The exit ramp from the Inner Loop LOCAL LANES to Telegraph Road South will be closed.
- The ramps from both directions of Telegraph Road to the Inner Loop LOCAL LANES will be closed.
- The ramp from the Inner Loop LOCAL LANES to the Eisenhower Connector will be closed.
Semper Fi 5k
The Semper Fi 5k is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday in Anacostia Park. No streets will be closed for the event, but there could be some delays on I-295 after the race. More info here.
