WASHINGTON – A prized piece of Titanic memorabilia is expected to bring in about $150,000 when it’s auctioned next month — a menu from the ship’s last lunch.
On April 14, 1912, first class travelers sat down just hours before their doom to an extravagant menu with 40 options. Over several courses, passengers chose from eggs Argenteuil, consomme fermier, chicken a la Maryland, galantine of chicken or grilled mutton chops, reports The Telegraph.
Ruth Dodge, a passenger on the ship and the wife of a prominent San Francisco banker, slipped the menu into her purse after eating that day, not knowing what was to come. She, her husband and her son, Washington Jr., survived the wreckage in a lifeboat, and the menu has remained in their family since.
The auction, held by Henry Aldridge & Son, is being held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the famous tragedy.
