WASHINGTON – Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell’s popularity is surging, but Virginia’s attorney general and the lieutenant governor are not faring so well, according to a new poll.

The Christopher Newport University poll says half of the state’s voters think Virginia is moving in the right direction, and less than a quarter think the country as a whole is moving that way.

Six out of 10 approve of McDonnell, yet Attorney General Ken Cuccinell’s approval rating is at 40 percent and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling polled at only 30 percent.

Also, 66 percent approve of the ban on purchasing more than one gun a month, which the general assembly has just voted to repeal.

When it comes to “personhood,” 52 percent oppose the proposed law approved in the House last week and facing a key vote in the State Senate later this month.

The poll, conducted earlier this month by telephone, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
