D.C. agrees to settlement in teen’s 2007 shooting death

WASHINGTON – A $100 million lawsuit against the District of Columbia and two police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in 2007 has been settled for an undisclosed sum.

A document filed Thursday in federal court by a lawyer for the family of DeOnte Rawlings says the parties have reached an agreement.

The two officers involved in the shooting were off duty during the incident. Officers James Haskel and Anthony Clay confronted DeOnte in September 2007 when they spotted him riding a minibike that Haskel believed was stolen from his home.

Police said the Ballou High School freshman shot at the officers. But an autopsy found no gunshot residue on his hands. No gun was found at the scene.

An investigation turned up no criminal wrongdoing by police.
