WASHINGTON – The Coast Guard rescued a 25-year-old man this week who was trying to walk across frozen Lake St. Clair. According to a news release from the Coast Guard, the man said he was attempting to walk from Detroit to Toronto.
On March 5, a lookout on the Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay spotted the man walking in the middle of the frozen lake, and an ice-rescue team was deployed to check on him. The team reached the man, treated him for hypothermia symptoms, and brought him aboard the cutter.
The man was not dressed appropriately for the conditions, was not wearing any floatation gear and had no means of communicating for help, according to the release.
After the rescue, the man was met by emergency medical service personnel and transferred to their care.
