WASHINGTON — Some military spouses awoke Tuesday to chilling messages on their social media accounts, which issued threats in the name of the Islamic State.
More than half a dozen women have said they received messages on Facebook or Twitter. At least one person said her account had been hacked.
The person or group posting the messages claimed to be connected with IS.
“We know everything about you, your husband and your children and we’re much closer than you can even imagine,” one post read. “You’ll see no mercy infidel!”
The source or origin of the messages has not been determined.
“Kind of scary stuff,” says Amy Bushatz, the managing editor of Military.com’s spouse and family blog SpouseBuzz.com.
“When you’re contacted by anyone claiming to be part of a terrorist organization, that’s really unnerving,” she says.
Another threat read: “While your president and your husband are killing our brothers in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan we’re coming for you,” according to The Hill.
The spouses singled out had been quoted in an online article about two weeks ago, Bushatz says.
“We can feel unnerved by this, but there’s no reason to drastically change the way we live or be constantly looking over our shoulders,” she says. “The difference between feeling afraid and acting afraid is a big one.”
