GAITHERBURG, Md. – Amid Friday’s severe weather, first responders in Montgomery County were not only rescuing humans.

They were braving the elements to save a tiny four-legged victim.

A baby deer had fallen into a hole dug for a construction project along the fence line of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg. Montgomery County police, animal services and Fire and EMS worked together to save the animal along Quince Orchard Road.

The department’s team that specializes in collapse happened to be in the area and responded to the scene to help, said Michael Leigh, Montgomery County fire battalion chief. A ladder was lowered into the 10-by-10-by-12-foot hole; using a pole, rescuers were able to catch the frightened deer and guide it up to safety.

After a quick exam by animal services officers, the deer was released back onto the NIST grounds.
