WASHINGTON — Hundreds of firefighters have been on rotation at the scene of a fire that broke out at a Maryland incinerator plant Thursday evening and was still burning early Saturday, officials said.

Firefighters arrived at the Resource Recovery Facility incinerator plant on 21204 Martinsburg Road in Dickerson, Maryland, to find an 85-foot-high pile of trash on fire, Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer said. The fire was spreading to the building, he said.

Piringer said firefighters quickly controlled the blaze, taking down several walls of the facility.

Some firefighters had been at the site of the fire for more than 48 hours, and others are expected to stay there all day Saturday.
